Its hard to deny the perfection that can be heard on these tracks. Its unfortunate that a lot of his music during and after his stint with the Army somehow gets overlooked or overshadowed by his image. When you listen to this material in relation to what other performers were doing at the time, you will realize just how damn good Elvis and his support players where in the studio. His voice was amazing and the sound of the band hits you in the face. Nothing even comes close.

The sweet sounds of Elvis singing during my high school years, what could be better except now I have the girl I was dreaming of then. Thank you for having this album, the last time I saw it I was 15 and it was vinyl.

The sound quality of this varies. My favorite two tracks on the album (1960 comp RCA/Victor LPM 2075) are "A Big Hunk of Love" and "I Got Stung." "A Big Hunk of Love," the opener on this CD, sounds muffled, a little distant. As I remember back when RCA got around to looking at Elvis's 1950s (recorded in mono!) catalog back in the mid-'80s, the researcher found the storage tapes in dreadful condition, and had to back-engineer the unadulterated mono sound from that gawdawful StErEo Electronically Reprocessed bathroom echo rechanneling that RCA used to destroy the mono sound quality of its pre-multitrack album masters, which RCA introduced January, 1962 (ugh.). Two other tracks, "Let's Have a Party" and "Paralyzed" have a distinct (ugh.) electronic echo, which strongly suggests that the mastering engineer summed a StErEo rechanneled copy of those songs back to bathroom echo mono.
It's a nice comp with flawed sound, but I don't think that there's much anyone can do with the degraded condition of the source recordings. RCA treated these rock 'n' roll-off-the-assembly-line hits as disposable, due to the major labels' belief that the whole rock 'n roll fad was going to run out very soon (1958+) and everyone would forget this kiddie sh..stuff and go back to hearing Frankie, Eddie, and Perry caress the microphone while the orchestra's violin sections swell. Pat Boone was already crooning like Bing, putting out an album of Irving Berlin songs. (Oh, yes, Pat Boone parodied this album cover, PAT BOONE SINGS GUESS WHO? on Dot in 1962-3; it's been reissued on CD. Check it out.)
Anyway, I bought this and the first GOLDEN RECORDS (extended version of RCA/Victor LPM 1707) comp for the convenience, the extra tracks, and not having to shift around an Lp box or two for the vinyl copies. Meh, it was fairly cheap, worth the money I paid.
Added note (4/17/12): I read DNF Raider's 3-star review of the other version of this album, and after (above noted) hearing a not-quite-right sounding "A Big Hunk Of Love" on this CD, track one, I pulled my 1985 Lp of 50,000,000 FANS..., RCA/Victor AFM1-5197 that Gregg Geller was responsible for and gave the two songs a listen. Bingo. CD has a different piano break; the Lp track on my Audio Technica turntable is brighter, too. I also checked "Let's Have a Party" and "Paralyzed" (tracks 9 and 10, respectively, on the CD) with my Bose headphones for that echo. The tracks aren't as annoying as I thought they'd be on my headphones, I don't get the ear-to-ear shouting match delay I thought possible for the StErEo rechanneling on my speakers.
